Schakowsky Statement on Casimir Pulaski Day

March 4, 2024

EVANSTON – Today, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky, released the following statement commemorating Casimir Pulaski Day:

“Happy Casimir Pulaski Day to all those celebrating in our community, and across the state of Illinois! Today, we celebrate the extraordinary life of General Casimir Pulaski and reflect upon the great impact that one immigrant crossing the ocean over two hundred years ago had on the founding of our nation.

“Casimir Pulaski traveled from Poland to America, to assist General George Washington and his army. Upon arriving, he wrote: ‘I came here, where freedom is being defended, to serve it, and to live or die for it.' He went on to serve as a revolutionary war officer, eventually losing his life during the struggle for American independence.

“The city of Chicago is home to the largest Polish diaspora in the world, and many residents of the 9th Congressional District of Illinois have their roots in Poland. This morning, I was so honored to join the great people at the Polish Museum of America for their annual festivities.

“General Pulaski's legacy represents the best of our nation’s shared heritage. America today, as then, inspires the minds and hearts of many who want to call our country home.”
