Schakowsky Statement on Fidel Castro's Recent Anti-Semitic Remarks

June 25, 2010

WASHINGTON, DC (June 25, 2010) — Rep.  Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) released the following statement on Fidel Castro's recent anti-Semitic remarks.

I strongly condemn recent statements by former Cuban President Fidel Castro comparing the State of Israel to the Nazi regime.  Castro's comments are extremely offensive and completely unacceptable.

Fidel Castro's statement that Israelis would not hesitate to send Palestinian civilians to Nazi crematoriums and that "the Fuhrer's swastika seems to be today's new Israeli flag... are a clear example of bigoted anti-Semitism.  His comments are a wholly inaccurate representation of Israel, and they are also incredibly insensitive and hurtful to Jews everywhere, many of whom are survivors or have relatives who perished in the crematoriums he referenced.

Castro's hateful comments are absolutely unacceptable and must be strongly and categorically denounced.   I call on the Obama Administration and other world leaders to clearly state that Castro's comments can not and will not be tolerated.  The United States Congress and government must continue to take a strong stand against anti-Semitism and violent hatred, wherever they occur.
