Schakowsky Statement on the Passing of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia

February 17, 2016

WASHINGTON DC- Representative Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement on the passing of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia:

“My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Justice Antonin Scalia. I extend my deepest condolences to them during this difficult time. Regardless of one’s thoughts on his decisions, there is no questioning his intellect or his love of our country. Justice Scalia was a one of a kind, larger than life personality whose absence will be deeply felt.”

“I am disappointed that Majority Leader McConnell and other leading Republicans have announced that they intend to take a partisan and obstructionist stance. The Constitution is very clear: the President must nominate someone to fill the vacancy and the Senate must act on the nomination. With so many crucial decisions set to be made by the court this year, the American people deserve a judicial branch that is fully functional. I sincerely hope the Senate will not stand in the way of its Constitutional obligation to move the confirmation process forward.”
