Schakowsky Statement Recognizing National Teacher Appreciation Week

May 10, 2018

Today, after co-sponsoring H. Res. 876, a bill supporting the goal of increasing public school teacher pay and public education funding, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky released the following statement in support of Teacher Appreciation Week:

"As a former elementary school teacher and the daughter of a teacher, I have a great appreciation for the work that public school teachers do every day to prepare our students for success. Teachers always rise to the challenge, even when the resources are limited and the pay is inadequate.

"Across the country, from West Virginia to Arizona, thousands of teachers have been walking out and striking to oppose low pay and to demand we invest in public schools. In Illinois, we know this fight very well, and I stand with those educators. We need to prioritize the investments in our teachers and schools to ensure that teachers are equipped with the resources to prepare our nation's children for the future.

"We have a responsibility to the next generation of leaders to properly invest in their education. Today, I want to say thank you to all public school teachers for the incredible work that they are doing to lead our students into the 21st century."
