Schakowsky Statement on President Trump's Drug Pricing Announcement
October 25, 2018

Today Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Whip and the Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus’ Health Task Force, released the following statement in response to President Trump’s proposal to lower drug prices through Medicare:

“I am gratified to see the Administration’s interest in curbing the soaring costs of prescription drugs and offering an important step forward in lowering Medicare Part B prices. I am supportive of it as only one part of a much needed comprehensive plan that would lower prices across-the-board and to all consumers. I hope that the Trump Administration continues to work on this crisis beyond issuing announcements two weeks prior to the midterm election. American families struggling to afford the costs of life-saving medicines need our help every week of the year.

“I hope that all parts of the Trump Administration will work together on this critical mission. At the same time that the Department of Health and Human Services wants to lower the cost of some drugs in the United States by pegging them to much lower prices in other countries, the Trump Administration’s U.S. Trade Representative has just proposed a plan would significantly increase the costs of foreign drugs. Our health and trade policies need to go in the same direction – lowering prescription drug costs and making sure that consumers here and around the world are not subject to price gouging and monopoly practices. I hope that today’s announcement will motivate President Trump’s US Trade Representative to change the new North American trade deal in order to lower – not raise – the costs of prescription drugs, especially biologics.”
