Congresswoman Schakowsky Statement on ACA Resolution

WASHINGTON, DC - Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Vice Chair of the Democracy Reform Task Force, issued the following statement on passage of House Resolution 271, condemning the Trump Administration’s legal campaign to take away Americans’ health care:

“Today I voted to condemn the Trump Administration’s decision to support the invalidation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in federal court. We must protect all Americans with pre-existing conditions, seniors struggling with high prescription drug costs, and the millions of Americans who have gained coverage under the ACA. Almost 312,280 people in my home state of Illinois selected health plans through the Affordable Care Act Exchange for 2019. We must protect them.”

“We must also protect women. When I was first came to Congress, being a woman was, in-effect, a preexisting condition. Before the passage of the Affordable Care Act, which I had the honor of helping to write, one-third of women who tried to buy a health plan on their own were either turned down or charged a higher premium. Insurers tried to stop women from enrolling in their plans by excluding coverage for services that women would likely need, like maternity care and mammograms. But the ACA changed all that.”

“The Trump Administration and many House Republicans want to go back. My colleagues across the aisle wish to be known as members of the party of health care, but refused to abandon the President’s dangerous attempt to sabotage Americans’ health care and vote for this resolution. They should be ashamed of themselves.”
