Congresswoman Schakowsky Statement on Passage of Violence Against Women Act

WASHINGTON, DC - Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement on passage of H.R. 1585, the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2019:

“The Violence Against Women Act has been absolutely vital in saving the lives of women and their families since its inception. We must continue to strengthen our response to crimes against women and deepen our commitment to all survivors. This reauthorization of VAWA makes much needed improvements to address gaps in current law, and does so in collaboration with victim service providers, law enforcement, and other experts in the field.

“Though VAWA has been working effectively for more than 24 years to protect women and families, domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking are still prevalent in our society. One in three women has experienced domestic violence and the numbers are even more staggering for sexual assault.  I will not stop fighting until we bring those numbers down to zero.

“I am also proud that this reauthorization of VAWA adds specific provisions that help protect Native American women by improving tribal access to federal crime information databases and reaffirming tribal jurisdiction over non-Indian perpetrators. This reauthorization also preserves and expands housing protections for domestic violence survivors, extends the Rape and Prevention Education grant program, and increases training for school-based and campus health centers. And it makes certain that the Office on Violence Against Women will never be diminished, merged, or consolidated. This reauthorization also ensures that transgender and gender non-conforming survivors of domestic violence are also protected by the provisions of this law.

“We must continue the fight to end violence against women on state, local, tribal, and international levels.  I will continue to partner with those who share this mission and will keep working to ensure all women are safe in their homes and communities.”
