Legislators call for full Environmental Impact Study on proposed Amtrak Hiawatha expansion

Glenview, IL – This afternoon, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, State Senator Daniel Biss, State Representative Laura Fine & State Representative Robyn Gabel sent a letter to the Federal Railroad Administration calling for a full Environmental Impact Study (EIS) on the potential consequences of the proposed UPRR Siding Extension at A-20 Project. This project would allow for the construction of a 10,000-foot freight train holding track in and near Glenview and Northbrook, Illinois.

Many Glenview and Northbrook residents will be living, working and playing in close proximity to this proposed holding track,” said Rep. Schakowsky. “We need additional study to ensure that the Federal Railroad Administration has fully examined any harmful impacts that may result from the project.”

"When the health and quality of life are at stake, we have a responsibility to ensure that every environmental impact is considered.” Sen. Biss said. “We must not rush this project without regard for neighboring communities."

"We need to protect our environment and the health and safety of our community and our residents.”  Rep. Fine said. “I am very concerned about the impact that noise and air pollution from idling trains in residential communities will have on my constituents."

"Until further studies to determine the harms posed by such a project are examined, the Federal Railroad Administration needs to hold off on proceeding with the siding extension.” Rep. Gabel said. “Glenview and Northbrook residents need to be reassured that there will be no safety, noise or environmental risks to their communities."
