Schakowsky introduces bill banning toxic ingredients from personal care products

Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky introduced H.R. 6903, the Safe Cosmetics and Personal Care Products Act of 2018. This bill calls for the full disclosure of all ingredients included in beauty and personal care products including fragrances. It also outright bans toxic ingredients, like carcinogens, in those products. After introducing the Safe Cosmetics Act, Rep. Schakowsky released the following statement:

“Most Americans would be shocked to realize that cosmetics are one of the least regulated consumer products on the market. Yet the average American uses about ten of them every day. That translates to being exposed to about 126 unique chemicals from your personal care products. This includes countless products families use on their babies and children.

“That’s why today I’m introducing the Safe Cosmetics and Personal Care Products Act of 2018. This bill not only calls for full disclosure of the many chemicals in our products but would ban toxic ingredients, including carcinogens, in them. This bill takes a step that should have already been taken – consumers, families, and workers have been at risk for far too long. We need to ban toxic beauty and personal care products and give the Food and Drug Administration the resources it needs to keep Americans safe, including recall ability.”

The introduction of the bill comes the same day as a brand new study from the Breast Cancer Prevention Partners found scores of unlisted and often dangerous chemicals in the fragrances of common beauty and personal care products, including many geared specifically towards children.
