Schakowsky joins Guinta, Lujan Grisham & Buchanan to Reintroduce the Safeguard American Food Exports Act of 2015 to end Horse Slaughter

WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement after the reintroduction of the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act:

“I am pleased to join Representatives Guinta, Lujan Grisham and Buchanan in reintroducing the SAFE Act (H.R. 1942).  This critically important legislation would help us end the horrific practice of horse slaughter once and for all.

I want to thank the animal welfare organizations that have been so engaged on this issue, including the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) and the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) for their tireless efforts to combat this slaughter.

While we have successfully ended domestic horse slaughter in recent years and prevented new slaughter plants from opening, many horses continue to be transported to Canada or Mexico, where they still face a gruesome end.  The SAFE Act would prohibit the interstate transport of horses or horsemeat intended for human consumption – preventing their slaughter.

I look forward to working closely with my colleagues to move this bipartisan legislation forward in Congress.”
