Schakowsky Statement on Casimir Pulaski Day

WASHINGTON– Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip, released the following statement:

Happy Casimir Pulaski Day! I’m honored to join all Illinoisans of Polish heritage and all the citizens of our great state as we reflect upon and celebrate the life of General Casimir Pulaski.

General Pulaski fought for his native Poland against Russian aggression, and was exiled from his homeland as a result. He came to the United States to join our fight for freedom in the American Revolution. Once here, General Pulaski put his military expertise to use assisting General George Washington and is today known as the father of the American Cavalry. Unfortunately, General Pulaski would end up giving his life to the cause at the Battle of Savannah in 1779.

He was one of the first in a long line of Polish immigrants who would fundamentally change our nation for the better. Just a few examples of Polish Americans who have left their mark include Mike Royko - Chicago's legendary columnist, Liberace, Steve Wozniak, and John Dingell, my good friend and the longest servicing member of the House of Representatives who recently passed away.

Today, Chicago is known as the largest Polish city outside Warsaw. One in 10 residents of the 9th Congressional District that I represent is of Polish descent, and I am proud to call many of them friends.

General Pulaski's legacy represents the best of our nations' shared heritage and is an important example of just how our nation benefits from its diversity. I ask that we take a moment to reflect on his story, and the ideals he gave up his life to pursue.
