Schakowsky statement on demolitions in Susya

Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Whip, released the following statement on the imminent demolition of seven structures in the Palestinian village of Susya after the Israeli Supreme Court declined to issue an injunction to prevent these demolitions:

“The Israeli Supreme Court’s decision to allow for the demolition of seven structures in Susya is extremely upsetting. For the sake of Israel’s security, the fate of Susya’s inhabitants, and the future promise of a two-state solution, I hope that the Israeli government does not move forward with these demolitions.

“In October, I visited Susya with a Congressional delegation and met children, women, and men, who call it home and whose lives would be devastated by this action. During this trip, it also became exceedingly clear to me that demolitions in villages like Susya are not helping Israel’s security – in fact they are a direct and grave threat to a viable two-state solution, and Israel’s safety.

“Yesterday, as soon as I read news of the Israeli Supreme Court’s decision, I registered my concern with the Israeli Consulate in Chicago and expressed my hope that this demolition will not go forward. I will continue to carefully monitor this situation as it develops.”
