Schakowsky Statement on International Women's Day 2019

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip, and Vice-Chair of the Democracy Reform Task Force, released the following statement on International Women’s Day:

“This International Women’s Day, it is clear that women are on the move. We should celebrate the progress that has been made, like the record-setting number of women serving in the U.S. House of Representatives. There’s a saying that if you’re not at the table, you’re probably on the menu, and now women are finally at the table,” Schakowsky said.

“Still, we must also acknowledge our responsibility to show up and fight for full equality for all women across the globe. There are many challenges that disproportionately impact women of color, low-income women, and undocumented female migrants, ranging from sexual harassment to gender-based violence. In 2012, I first introduced the International Violence Against Women Act, which ensures that the eradication of violence against women is a key component of the U.S. foreign policy agenda. I plan to reintroduce this bill for the fourth time this Congress and will keep doing so until it is signed into law.”

“Today, my colleague Representative Maloney and I reintroduced a resolution to support the long-awaited U.S. ratification of the international Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), which the United Nations adopted thirty years ago. I am also proud to cosponsor the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act which was reintroduced yesterday.”

“Let us all commit to making the goal of equality a reality for women everywhere. When women succeed, all of humanity succeeds.”
