Schakowsky Votes to End Forced Arbitration

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip, and chair of the Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, voted to restore access to the courts for millions of American consumers and employees, who are currently locked into a forced arbitration system that favors corporations. H.R. 1423, the Forced Arbitration Injustice Repeal Act, passed the U.S. House by a vote of 225-186.

“Every day, people are signing employment agreements, activating a new debit card, or simply downloading an app on their phones, all the while not knowing they are signing away their rights in perpetuity. Today, I voted to restore access to justice for millions of Americans who are currently locked out of the court system to deal with issues ranging from fraud to sexual harassment in the workplace, to elder abuse in nursing homes,” said Congresswoman Schakowsky. “Today, we voted to end this deceptive practice and give consumers and workers their rights.”

This bill is supported by a broad coalition of more than 70 public interest, labor, consumer, civil rights, and advocacy organizations, including Public Citizen, Consumer Reports, Earthjustice, Alliance for Justice, the American Association of Justice, the Communications Workers of America, the Leadership Conference of Civil Rights, the NAACP, and the American Antitrust Institute.

Last week, Congresswoman Schakowsky shared an example on the House Floor about the dangers of forced arbitration. Video of that speech is available HERE.
