Seniors Task Force Co-Chairs Unveil Report Documenting Republican Attacks on Seniors

Today, ahead of the 53rd anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid being signed into law on July 30, 1965 and the 83rd anniversary of Social Security on August 14, Seniors Task Force Co-Chairs Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and Doris Matsui (D-CA) joined Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to unveil a new report documenting years of Republicans’ attacks on seniors. The report, titled “The Republican Record on Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security: Attacks on Benefits Seniors Have Earned and Deserve,” is available here. After releasing the report, the Members released the following statements:

“This is the time of year when we normally gather together to mark the anniversaries of Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, celebrating with cake and balloons. This year is different because there is another date on our mind– December 22, 2017. That’s the day the Republican Tax Scam was signed into law,” said Congresswoman Schakowsky. “Now, to pay for their $2 trillion in tax breaks for millionaires, billionaires and outsourcing corporations, Republicans are taking direct aim at Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. The report we are unveiling today details this attack and years’ worth of GOP assaults on seniors and older Americans. Republicans believe that it’s more important to give tax breaks to billionaires than earned benefits to seniors.  Democrats disagree – and we’re fighting back to protect those treasured programs.”

“This report shows how the passage of theGOP tax bill was just one step in a long line of Republican attacks on seniors," said Congresswoman Matsui. "In budget after budget, year after year, Republicans have reaffirmed their commitment to gutting Medicaid, scaling back Medicare, and cutting seniors’ earned Social Security benefits. Democrats are focusing on efforts that help seniors and families, like lowering drugs prices, and fighting to ensure that these vital programs are here for current and future generations.”

“Almost 53 years ago, our government made a fundamental promise of dignity and security for seniors and working families, when President Lyndon Johnson signed Medicare and Medicaid into law,” said Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi.  “Today, these pillars of health and financial security are under grave threat from years of relentless Republican attacks.  The GOP’s health care agenda means making Medicare wither on the wine, cutting and capping Medicaid into oblivion and handing massive tax giveaways to Big Pharma CEOs who are hiking seniors’ and families’ prescription drug costs.  Democrats are fighting for the people, and are offering A Better Deal to lower the cost of prescription drugs, with tough new enforcement of drug price gouging, allowing Medicare Part D to negotiate lower drug prices and demanding transparency of Big Pharma’s price hikes.”

The report is available here.
