Statement on Passage of Bipartisan, Bicameral, Resolution Condemning President Trump's Abandonment of the Syrian Kurds

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky made the following statement upon passage of the bipartisan, bicameral resolution she supported condemning President Trump’s abandonment of the Syrian Kurds:

“Until 10 days ago, the United States was executing a plan in Syria that utilized a small number of U.S. special operations forces, partnered with Syrian Kurdish and Arab forces, to prevent the Assad regime from continuing to slaughter its own people; eliminate ISIS; and stop the expansion of Russian and Iranian influence in Syria. Our troops, who have suffered no casualties, have been successful in their mission: ISIS has been greatly diminished, Assad contained, and other actors, including Turkey, has been locked in place.

“Unfortunately, on October 6th, President Trump and Turkish President Erdogan had a phone call after which the White House announced the withdrawal of the United States from northern Syria. Shortly thereafter the Turkish military crossed into Syria and began attacking the Kurdish forces who only hours before were strong U.S. allies. Not only was this a horrific betrayal of the Syrian Kurds, but it set in motion a negative chain of events which are rippling across the region and world. Assad and Russia are now clear to expand their control over Syrian territory, ISIS members are slowly escaping containment and making their way back into the world, and Turkey has invaded northern Syria posing an existential threat to Syria’s Kurds. President Trump’s decision in this case was not based on a professional foreign policy process, but rather an impulsive decision, made unilaterally by the President with the encouragement of Turkey’s President Erdogan. Our military didn’t even know it was happening until they saw it on Twitter.

“That is why today Democrats and Republicans, in both the House and Senate, have taken action by passing a rare joint resolution condemning President Trump’s recent action in Syria. The resolution, which I voted for, calls on Turkish President Erdogan to immediately cease unilateral military action in Northeast Syria and to respect existing agreements relating to Syria. It calls on President Trump to continue supporting Syrian Kurdish communities through humanitarian support, including for those displaced or otherwise affected by ongoing violence in Syria. The resolution also calls on the President to work to ensure that the Turkish military acts with restraint and respects existing agreements relating to Syria. And finally, our bill calls on the White House to present a clear and specific plan for the enduring defeat of ISIS.

“The President’s abandonment of the Kurds sends a horrific message to the rest of the world that we are willing to jettison allies on a whim. A fragile situation has been made much worse by U.S. abandonment of the Kurds. Donald J. Trump is not fit to be Commander in Chief and I hope this action, and the passage of the bipartisan resolution opens my Republican colleagues’ eyes to how dangerous this Presidency is to U.S. national security and the security of our friends and allies around the globe.”
