Rep. Schakowsky Statement on 39th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade
Washington, DC (January 20, 2012) - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) released the following statement to honor the 39th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Roe v. Wade, which falls on Sunday, January 22nd:
"Thirty nine years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court stood with American women in a monumental decision that constitutionally guaranteed a woman's right to choose. Today, this right is under assault. The Republican-led House of Representatives and powerful anti-choice forces continue to launch attacks to weaken and erode a woman's right to choose. They would have us return to an era in which a woman is not the ultimate decider of what can and cannot be done with her own body. We must continue to fight back against cruel attempts to deny women access to safe and legal abortion, and we must safeguard the right to reproductive freedom for all women.
I will continue to vigorously oppose attempts to intrude into the most intimate aspects of women's lives or erode the Supreme Court's decisions in Roe v. Wade. The decision to have an abortion should be made by a woman and her doctor, not by her government....
