Rep. Schakowsky Statement On Continued Violence in Honduras

March 17, 2016

Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement after the murder of Honduran activist Nelson Garcia:

“Enough is enough. It’s time to end the violence directed at human rights activists and labor organizers in Honduras. On March 2, Honduran indigenous rights activist Berta Caceres was murdered. Last night, yet another activist, Nelson Garcia, was assassinated in Honduras. The United States and the international community must take further action to pressure the Honduran government to protect the rights and the safety of advocates and organizers. That is why I recently joined my colleagues in calling for Secretary Kerry to use his influence to protect Honduran activists and halt any support for the Honduras militias that may have been involved in these crimes. Hondurans who want to improve their country and the rights of workers should be able to speak out – not have their voices silenced through violence and fear. The world is watching."
