Rep. Schakowsky Statement on the Des Plaines River Project's Inclusion in the Water Resources Development Act

May 26, 2016

Washington, DC – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), released the following statement after the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee announced that funding for the next phase of the Des Plaines River Project would be included in the Water Resources Development Act. This inclusion will allow for almost $200 million in federal funding for Phase II of the project. This project was also included in the Senate version of the bill. Last week, Representative Schakowsky along with Representatives Mike Quigley, Danny Davis, Robin Kelly, Luis Gutiérrez, Tammy Duckworth, Dan Lipinski, Bill Foster and Bobby Rush sent a letter to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee leaders urging them to include the next phase of the Des Plaines River Project in this year’s Water Resources Development Act:

“I am pleased that the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee included almost $200 million for the next phase of the Des Plaines River Project in its Water Resources Development Act, after I sent a letter with my Chicago colleagues in support of this project. This project will not only reduce flood risk in our communities but also support our local economy and create jobs. While I am optimistic about securing funding there is still work left to do and I will keep pushing to advance this important project for the Chicago area.”
