WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and the American
Legion Auxiliary Unit #473 presented a U.S. flag to immigrants and refugees learning U.S.
civics and history at the Chinese Mutual Aid Association (CMAA).
The flag donation was made during an official ceremony held on Flag Day, June 14, 1999.
"The American flag is a symbol of our nation's diversity and tolerance, and above all, it is a
symbol of freedom. It is a lasting tribute to the men and women who fought for that freedom
before us and guaranteed our liberty today. The United States has always been a nation of immigrants and continues to rely on immigrants to help build our future. As we celebrate Flag Day together, I am filled with a sense of pride at what we have accomplished and a sense of optimism at what we hope to achieve in the next century," said Representative Schakowsky.
