REPRESENTATIVE SCHAKOWSKY HAILS PASSAGE OF BILLAWARDING ROSA PARKS CONGRESSIONAL GOLD MEDAL

WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today hailed the passage of H.R. 573, a bill authorizing the President to award a gold medal on behalf of Congress to Rosa Parks.  Representative Schakowsky is an original cosponsor of the bill introduced by Representative Julia Carson (D-IN) on February 4, 1999.

"Rosa Parks is a national treasure and an inspiration for social equality.  She reminds us that the pursuit for justice is an obligation for all instead of a choice for some.  Her life's work is a shining light in our nation's history and a guide to what we hope to become in the future.  That is why I am pleased to be a part of this historic day in Congress where we honor Rosa Parks, a woman of true convictions and immeasurable accomplishments," said Representative Schakowsky.

The Senate unanimously approved similar legislation yesterday.  The bill now awaits the President's signature.
