Schakowsky and Durbin Celebrate the Abner J. Mikva Post Office Bill Being Signed into Law

December 19, 2016

Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky and Senator Dick Durbin released the following statements to celebrate the signing of a bill to name the Post Office on Davis Street in Evanston after Abner J. Mikva. A favorite son of Evanston, Abner Mikva is one of the few Americans to have served in all three branches of the federal government – as a Congressman, the Chief Judge of the DC Circuit Court, and President Bill Clinton’s White House Counsel.

“Abner Mikva was one of my closest friends and among the most generous and caring people I have ever met,”said Rep. Jan Schakowsky. “During his service in each of the three branches of our federal government, he displayed an unparalleled commitment to his country and his community. I am very happy that Senator Durbin and I will be able to pay this small tribute to Ab by naming the Post Office on Davis Street after him.”

“Abner Mikva was always my North Star for integrity, independence, and progressive values. He could not be more deserving of this recognition and honor,”said Senator Durbin. “He may have been the ‘nobody nobody sent,’ but his influence will be felt for generations. I am proud to join Congresswoman Schakowsky in this effort to recognize his many years of public service.”
