SCHAKOWSKY ANNOUNCES THE WINNERS OF 2008 CONGRESSIONAL ARTS COMPETITION | ||
Washington, D.C.–U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) announced the winners of the 27th Annual Congressional Arts Competition, An Artistic Discovery. Thirty six students from 14 area high schools participated in this year's competition. Congresswoman Schakowsky praised the talent of all the students who submitted artwork and the art teachers who encouraged their students to participate in the competition. The winners of the 2008 competition from Illinois' 9th Congressional District are: Alfredo Echeverria, Jr., Notre Dame High School-"Flesh... (First Place) "Every year I am so impressed by the quality of the artwork and talent of each young artist from the 9th Congressional District. The toughest part of the competition is picking just one first place winner because all of the artwork is exceptional,... said U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky. "I want to thank all of the young artists who participated in this year's competition and the art teachers who helped make the competition a success. Not only is the competition an opportunity for students to showcase their artwork, but it also helps enrich our community by promoting the arts.... Alfredo Echeverria, Jr., a senior at Notre Dame High School, won first place with a dramatic photograph of the "flesh" and seeds of a cantaloupe. Alfredo's "Flesh... will be on display in the hallway of the U.S. Capitol for one year along with other pieces of artwork from students in congressional districts across the country. Alfredo and one guest have been invited to the nation's capital to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony and gala reception opening the Artistic Discovery exhibition. Alfredo will also receive a scholarship to the High School Summer Institute at Columbia College Chicago.
