SCHAKOWSKY APPOINTED CHIEF DEPUTY WHIP UNDER NANCY PELOSI

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) was appointed today to the leadership post of Chief Deputy Whip by House Democratic Leader Dick Gephardt. Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was officially sworn-in yesterday as the House Democratic Whip.

"It is an honor and privilege to serve under the leadership of Dick Gephardt and Nancy Pelosi. I am proud to be part of a team whose immediate agenda is to provide long overdue assistance to laid off workers, to get people back to work, and to get our economy moving again in the right direction," Schakowsky said.

"Jan Schakowsky is a great organizer who knows how to build coalitions and is a passionate voice for women and working families," Pelosi said.

Representative Max Sandlin (D-TX) was also appointed to the post. Schakowsky and Sandlin join Representatives John Lewis (D-GA), Maxine Waters (D-CA), Chet Edwards (D-TX), and Ed Pastor (D-AZ). Schakowsky is the only member from the Midwest.

"This position gives me an even greater opportunity to work with my colleagues to achieve critical goals - protecting Social Security and Medicare, providing a comprehensive prescription drug benefit for seniors, and securing the future of working families," Schakowsky concluded.
