SCHAKOWSKY: BUSH ADMINISTRATION MISSTATEMENT OF THE DAY -
JOBS
WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) issued "The Bush Administration Misstatement of the Day" on jobs.
According to a transcript on the White House webpage, Commerce Secretary Don Evans stated that he was "optimistic about the continued strength of our economy," and added that he believes that "the job market is strong and will continue to get stronger." (8/19/04)
However, job figures in many states tell a different story. For example:
- Illinois has lost 223,300 jobs since the beginning of the Bush Administration.
- Illinois has lost 142,200 manufacturing jobs since the beginning of the Bush Administration, including 1,100 jobs in July.
- Number of unemployed workers has risen in 46 states since the beginning of the Bush Administration.
