SCHAKOWSKY: BUSH ADMINISTRATION'S MISSTATEMENT OF THE DAY -
HAITI
WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) issued today's "Bush Administration's Misstatement of the Day" on Haiti.
During his State of the Union address, President Bush said, "Because of American leadership and resolve, the world is changing for the better." (1/20/04)
However, President Bush is refusing to act decisively to prevent a humanitarian crisis that is costing innocent lives and threatening to overthrow a democratic government in Haiti. President Bush even reiterated ".that the U.S. Coast Guard will turn away those who try to escape to the United States by boat." (CNN, 2/25/04)
Schakowsky said, "What is the US waiting for? Are we waiting for a bloodbath in our own neighborhood? There is a crisis in Haiti and the United States must act immediately to end the violence and to protect the people of Haiti."
