SCHAKOWSKY: BUSH ADMINISTRATION'S MISSTATEMENT OF THE DAY -
TAX CUTS AND JOBS

WASHINGTON, D.C. - {WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) issued today's "Bush Administration's Misstatement of the Day" on tax cuts and jobs.

Speaking today to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce about the Bush Administration economic record and praising its fiscal policies, Vice President Cheney declared: The tax relief we passed is working.

However, the Bush Administration "tax relief" has failed to boost the economy and create jobs. Under the leadership of President Bush:

  • 48 states have lost 2.8 million manufacturing jobs, including Illinois, which has lost 139,900 manufacturing jobs.
  • 2.2 million more Americans are unemployed, with 8.2 million people looking for work.
  • 4.4. million Americans are working part-time because they cannot find full time work.
  • The average length of unemployment hovers at the highest level in almost 20 years. The average out-of-work American is unemployed for 5 months, the highest level since 1984.
