Schakowsky Celebrates Lunar New Year
WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Chairwoman of Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, issued the following statement recognizing Lunar New Year:
"Happy Lunar New Year to those celebrating in the 9th Congressional District and across the globe. This joyous day is a time for families to come together and celebrate new beginnings, while also taking time to reflect on the previous year. May this Lunar New Year bring us all renewed strength and optimism for the future.
"This past year, I was horrified by the numerous hate crimes targeting our Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. For every high profile hate crime that makes it to the forefront of our national consciousness, hundreds and thousands of nameless victims and families have been targeted. We must stand firm against hatred, bigotry, and discrimination wherever and whenever we see it. I am committed to preventing these injustices and building a safer, brighter future for all.
"Despite the difficulties of the past year, we also had many bright moments. I am so proud that Illinois became the first state in the nation to mandate that Asian American history be part of its public-school curriculum. I am also happy to cosponsor legislation in Congress that will make Lunar New Year a federal holiday.
"As we leave behind the Year of the Ox and welcome in the Year of the Tiger, let us all embrace our inner strength and power. I wish all those celebrating a happy, healthy, and prosperous year ahead."
