SCHAKOWSKY, COLLEAGUES APPROVE CONGRESSIONAL RESOLUTION WELCOMING THE PRIME MINISTER OF INDIA TO THE UNITED STATES
WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today joined her colleagues in approving H.Con. Res. 264, a resolution welcoming the Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee to the United States.
The resolution also expresses Congress' "gratitude to the Government of India for its expressions of sympathy for the September 11 terrorist attacks, and its demonstrated willingness to fully cooperate with the United States in the campaign against terrorism." Furthermore, Congress "pledges its commitment to the continued expansion of friendship and cooperation between the United States and India."
"Following the devastating attacks of September 11, India immediately expressed its solidarity with the American people and vowed to join our mission against international terrorism. The world's largest democracy is a true friend to our nation."
"Over the years, the United States and India have become strategic partners in trade, the environment, and many other areas that greatly impact our nations. And we in Congress are committed to expanding that partnership and friendship," Schakowsky added.
Schakowsky, who is a member of the Congressional India Caucus and represents a large and vibrant Indian-American community, traveled with President Clinton to India last year.
