Schakowsky: Make Sure You Thank a Union Member
EVANSTON - Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Chair of the Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee of the Energy and Commerce Committee, released the following statement commemorating Labor Day:
"Every year, we come together on Labor Day to honor and celebrate American workers and their contributions to our society. I must say, this year's festivities have taken on a new meaning. Not only has our economy added 10 million jobs since President Biden took office, but we have also learned that working-aged women are now back to work at rates not seen since before the pandemic. I can feel a shift in our nation, a rebirth of the American Labor Movement.
"Today and every day, we must celebrate the worker-powered movement. Union election petitions to the National Labor Relations Board were up 58% in Fiscal Year 2022. The Biden administration is the most pro-worker administration ever to occupy the White House, and Democrats in both chambers of Congress have their back.
"Last month, I was proud to welcome Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh to Chicago to celebrate the historic multi-employer pension rescue that was included in the American Recue Plan. As a proud dues-paying member of Workers United, I know firsthand that unions lead to better wages and benefits. Thanks to Democrats and the Biden administration, millions of retired union workers and their pensions will now be protected for decades to come.
"As your three-day weekend comes to a close, make sure you thank a union member. Happy Labor Day!"
