Schakowsky Participates in Roundtable on LGBTQ Health Care Issues

June 14, 2019

CHICAGO, IL – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky participated in a roundtable discussion hosted by Howard Brown Health with leaders in Chicago’s LGBTQ health sector. From day one of the House Democratic Majority, Congress has fought to protect people with pre-existing conditions and to drive down the price of prescription drugs for all Americans. While Republicans continue to threaten to destroy protections for people with pre-existing in the courts, Schakowsky is joining Democrats around the country in raising a drumbeat throughout the nation with our Health Care for All Americans Weekend of Action – spotlighting the need for action to protect and improve our health care.

This June, Pride Month helps focus attention on the need to provide comprehensive and compassionate health care to vulnerable communities in the Chicagoland area. The LGBTQ community has unique health challenges that are threatened by Trump Administration policies. In response, House Democrats have taken bold steps to address this issue, and today discussed what additional actions would benefit the community.

“The health care of our LGBTQ community is under attack,” said Congresswoman Schakowsky. “This year we have seen the Trump Administration put out a federal guidance that allows medical professionals to cite their personal beliefs in denying needed medical care. They are actively trying to roll back protections against discrimination based on sex and gender identity. Howard Brown is an essential community health center for the Chicagoland area, and working with them, we will fight against these attacks, while increasing access to prescription drugs, such as HIV medications and PrEP.”

David Munar, President and CEO of Howard Brown Health, added, “As we prepare to celebrate the 50th annual Pride parade, Howard Brown Health will continue to work with leaders like Representatives Schakowsky and Quigley to ensure community voices are heard and involved in the fight against discrimination. Access to culturally competent healthcare and social services are crucial to the LGBTQ community. We are proud to collaborate with our elected officials and our patients as we fight back against the current attacks on human rights and health equity.”

Howard Brown Health Center is an LGBTQ support organization based in Chicago. It was founded as a healthcare provider, and now provides health and social services in several locations in the Chicago area.
