Schakowsky on Protecting Roe v. Wade; Ruling’s 38th Anniversary
WASHINGTON, DC (January 22, 2011) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) issued the following statement on the anniversary of the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade ruling.
"Today marks the 38th anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling on Roe v. Wade, which permanently and historically wove a woman's right to choose into the fabric of our country's values.
"The landmark decision provides a Constitutional guarantee of a basic, yet profound right: Women are the true deciders when it comes to their own bodies.
"Today we remember what it took — the passion, endurance, and organization — to ensure that we are a country that recognizes and supports not only women, but the ideal of free choice over one's destiny.
"On this anniversary, we also remember that every day since January 22nd, 1973 we have had to defend Roe and the protections it bestows against a determined foe.
"The threat is real. We must rally, unite and push back....
