Schakowsky Requests Hearing From Illinois EPA on BP's Air Permit Application

Washington, D.C.-- U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), a member of the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Environment and Hazardous Materials, led members of the Illinois congressional delegation today in sending a bipartisan letter to the Illinois EPA requesting a public hearing on British Petroleum's permit application under the Clean Air Act to increase production in their Whiting Refinery, which could potentially increase greenhouse gas emissions. The U.S. EPA has already signaled that it intends to approve the Indiana Department of Environmental Management permit. The Illinois EPA has the discretion to hold a public hearing on any Clean Air permit regardless of whether or not they are the permit granting state.

The signed letter can be viewed here.
