SCHAKOWSKY RESPONDS TO U.S. SUPREME COURT'S DECISION ON THE TREATMENT OF DETAINEES AT GUANTANAMO BAY | ||
Washington, D.C.–U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), a member of the House Intelligence Committee, released the following statement today in response to the U.S. Supreme Court's 5-4 ruling giving detainees at Guantanamo Bay the right to challenge their detention in federal court. "Today's decision represents a sharp rebuke of the Bush Administration's prosecution of detainees as enemy combatants. The high court's decision shows that the U.S. Constitution remains supreme even during extraordinary times when the will of our country has been tested. I'm proud that the Supreme Court had the strength, courage, and wisdom to stand up to the Bush Administration and reject its ongoing efforts to selectively apply laws to certain individuals. Today's decision reminds all of us that we are a nation of laws and that we must never sacrifice the ideals and principles that our enemies seek to destroy.... |
