Schakowsky’s Statement Praising Administration for Vetoing Anti-Israel Resolution

February 18, 2011

WASHINGTON, DC (February 18, 2011) — Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) issued the following statement in praise of the Obama Administration for vetoing a United Nations resolution initiated by the Palestinians to to condemn Israel.

"I commend the Obama Administration for standing with Israel today at the United Nations by vetoing the proposed Palestinian resolution condemning settlements.  I share the President's view that settlement construction is an impediment to peace and should be halted, as well as his conviction that core issues like this must be negotiated between the Israelis and the Palestinians, not decided by the UN.  I support the President's efforts to help the parties reach a two-state solution through peaceful negotiation.  Instead of pursuing unconstructive resolutions like the one considered today, I urge the parties to return to the negotiating table to try to reach a lasting, two-state solution
