Schakowsky Sends Letter to EPA on Tier 3 Standards
Today, Rep. Schakowsky and 41 other members of Congress – including Reps. Henry Waxman and John Dingell – sent a letter to EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy urging a final rule on the agency’s Tier 3 Vehicle Emission and Fuel Standards program. The rule would reduce tailpipe and evaporative emissions from passenger cars, light-duty trucks, medium-duty passenger vehicles, and some heavy-duty vehicles. The proposed rule, which was published last May, would dramatically improve public health and the environment. Schakowsky made the following statement about the letter:
“My colleagues and I support EPA’s proposed rule to reduce harmful emissions that threaten public health and the environment. A final rule on the Tier 3 standards could prevent tens of thousands of asthma attacks and nearly 2,500 premature deaths every year by 2030. With one-third to one-half of our population suffering from near-constant exposure to traffic-related air pollution, we cannot afford to wait. I look forward to the EPA completing its rulemaking as soon as possible.”
