Schakowsky Statement on the 46th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade
Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Vice Chair of the Democracy Reform Task Force, released the following statement on the 46th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision:
“Over forty years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a decisive ruling of 7-2 in favor of women’s health and reproductive rights in the case of Roe v. Wade. The ruling brought abortions out of the dark and gave women control over their bodies and health. The ruling did not mark the beginning of abortions, but it did mark the end of women dying from them.
“While this important decision forty-six years ago was an advancement for women within American society, the attacks on our reproductive rights continue. President Trump and Republicans have supported Supreme Court Justices who hold hostile views of Roe v. Wade. There have been systematic attacks to defund Planned Parenthood. These actions, and others, highlight all that is at stake and the advances that many are seeking to overturn.
“This is why we must continue the aggressive fight for women’s health and reproductive rights, especially with President Trump in the White House. There are now over 100 dynamic women representing Congressional districts across the nation. I will continue to stand and fight with my colleagues - we have to - for this and future generations. Women across the country are watching, they don't like what they see, and they won't soon forget the actions of those trying to set us back.”
