Schakowsky Statement on Appeals Court Ruling DOMA Unconstitutional

WASHINGTON, D.C. (October 18, 2012) — Today, Rep. Schakowsky (D-Ill.) released the following statement after the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional.

"I applaud the decision made by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals today, which ruled that DOMA is unconstitutional. The court confirmed what I and many others have long argued: all Americans deserve equal treatment under the law, and DOMA prevents that from happening. I have always been a supporter of marriage equality, and I am pleased that the court held that same-sex couples deserve constitutional protection.

Today's victory moves us closer to elimination of DOMA and its discrimination against same-sex relationships. As the legal and legislative challenges continue, we must fight each and every day in the ongoing struggle for equal rights....
