Schakowsky Statement on Central States Pension Fund

May 6, 2016

CHICAGO – Representative Jan Schakowsky released following statement after the Treasury Department rejected a proposal by the Teamsters’ Central States Pension Fund to cut benefits for more than 200,000 retirees:

“I strongly support the Treasury Department’s decision not to cut the pension benefits of more than 200,000 Central State retirees. These retirees worked hard to earn their benefits and rely on them in retirement. While important steps must be taken to ensure the long term security of these pensions, cutting benefits for hard-working men and women should not be the answer. That is why I opposed legislation that would allow multiemployer pension funds to cut benefits to current retirees and worked with my colleagues to prevent cuts that could have reduced Central States pensions by 50% or more. We must continue to fight to ensure that every American is able to retire with dignity and peace of mind.”
