Schakowsky Statement on Co-Sponsoring the For The People Act

Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip and Vice Chair of the Democracy Reform Task Force, offered the following statement after she cosponsored H.R. 1, the For the People Act, the House Democratic Majority's signature legislation to strengthen democracy, get big money out of politics, and clean up Congress:

"I am proud to join Speaker Pelosi, Congressman John Sarbanes, and more than 155 other House Democrats in taking an important first step toward fulfilling our promise to strengthen our democracy."

"For too long, House Republicans have rewarded corporate backers and billionaire donors with massive tax cuts and regulatory rollbacks. They have shielded their wealthy patrons from Congressional scrutiny. And, the outsized role that partisan redistricting, voter suppression and billionaire campaign financiers have played in our electoral politics and public policy formulation has shaken the faith of many Americans. Thankfully, as one of our first acts of business, the House Democratic Majority has introduced H.R. 1, which would remedy each of these problems."

"I am hopeful the President and Senate Majority Leader McConnell will join us to pass this ambitious reform agenda, and restore Americans' faith in our democracy."
