SCHAKOWSKY STATEMENT ON DEATH OF 2000TH U.S. SOLDIER IN IRAQ
WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today released the following statement after news reports that the number of American soldiers killed in Iraq reached 2,000.
"Today America passed another tragic milestone in Iraq. Two thousand American service members have now lost their lives in the war in Iraq. As we pause to honor their memories, we must demand answers, accountability, and a new direction from the Bush Administration."
"The President misled Americans about the reasons we went to war, and has refused to admit that his Iraq strategy has failed at every level. Our sons and daughters are dying in a war with no end in sight."
"Iraq has become more dangerous, not less. It has become what it wasn't before, a country divided along ethnic and religious lines, and a breeding ground for terrorist attacks."
"The time to begin withdrawing our troops from Iraq is long overdue. The continued loss of American lives and waste of billions of taxpayer dollars has led to an untenable situation."
"The President has left himself and all Americans with no good options. But the worst of all is to keep 150,000 American soldiers in Iraq. It is time to start bringing them home."
