Press Release

CHICAGO – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky released the following statement after Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson announced that the Department would begin reviewing their use of privatized immigration detention facilities:

“I am pleased that the Department of Homeland Security will review its use of private immigration detention facilities. I have long called for the use of these private detention facilities to come to an end. Many of the woman and children detained in these facilities are refugees fleeing from horrific violence, only to be held in inhumane conditions.  Private companies make millions in taxpayer dollars by forcing detained immigrants into overcrowded cells.  I am hopeful that at the end of this review the DHS will shut down these facilities once and for all.”
