Schakowsky Statement on Energy and Commerce Committee Passage of Autonomous Vehicle Legislation

July 27, 2017

Washington D.C. -Today, Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection Subcommittee Ranking Member Jan Schakowsky released the following statement after the full Energy and Commerce Committee markup of the SAFE DRIVE Act:

“The bipartisan autonomous vehicle legislation reported by the Energy and Commerce Committee today was the result of months of discussion and weeks of intense negotiations. My goal throughout this process has been to make sure AV technology is deployed safely and that we also advance existing safety technologies.

“Our bipartisan agreement incorporates safety priorities: mandatory safety assessment certifications, a priority plan for writing new and updating existing safety standards, cybersecurity and privacy plans from AV manufacturers, and HOT CARS legislation to prevent child heatstroke deaths in vehicles. I will continue working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to get those safety improvements and consumer protections enacted into law.”
