Schakowsky Statement on the Formation of a Unity Government in Israel
EVANSTON, IL – Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip, made the following statement on news that a unity government in Israel had been formed:
“A unity government in Israel has been formed ending a yearlong political impasse. This should be cause for celebration as Israel requires sound governmental footing to tackle the serious challenges posed by COVID-19, lack of a peace deal with the Palestinians, and numerous external threats. However, as the details behind the unity government become more clear, it appears Prime Minister Netanyahu has formed a government not only designed to keep himself out of legal trouble, but one that is also determined to unilaterally annex areas of the West Bank and Jordan Valley in coordination with President Trump. Any such annexation would be a death knell to the peace process, and a further deterioration of the rights of the Palestinian people.
“I strongly support Israel and its long-term survival as a democratic Jewish state. However, unilateral actions from any party that would make peace impossible by directly threatening Israel’s long term security and democracy must be rejected. Late last year the majority of the U.S. House of Representatives voted to pass H.Res.326, a resolution putting Congress on record in opposition to annexation and in support of ending the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through a negotiated two-state solution. Now is the time for all of us to stand up for Israel’s long term security, justice for the Palestinians, and to reject any action that pushes peace farther from reality.”
