Schakowsky Statement on Holocaust Remembrance Day
CHICAGO – Today, Representative Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day:
“Today, we remember the lives lost to the horror of the Holocaust. Nearly six million Jewish people, including over one million children were senselessly executed in a horrific act of genocide. After World War II, my district became home for the largest population of Holocaust survivors second only to Israel. Today, there are an estimated 2,000 survivors living in the Chicago area. My district is home to the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center, which ensures that the lessons of the Holocaust are never forgotten.
“We honor and solemnly remember all of those who fell victim to this heinous act. We must also never forget what happens when the voices of hate and prejudice are allowed to take root. Today, we pledge to never again let such an atrocity happen on our watch.“
