WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Senior Chief Deputy Whip, and Vice-Chair of the Democracy Reform Task Force, released the following statement:

“Today my colleague Representative Lucille Roybal-Allard introduced H.R. 6, the Dream and Promise Act. As the daughter of immigrants, I am so proud to co-sponsor this important legislation that will provide permanent legal protections, and a path to citizenship, for millions of Dreamers as well as hundreds of thousands of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) holders.

For too long, the Trump Administration has attacked our immigrant communities, tearing families apart and deporting countless people to countries they do not know. Dreamers came to our great nation as children. They grew up in the U.S. They go to school, work, run businesses, serve in the military, and build families in the U.S. They are our friends, family, and neighbors. They are Americans.

TPS and DED holders are no different. The average TPS holder has lived in the U.S. for 20 years and spent the majority of their adult life here. Many TPS and DED holders have U.S. citizen children. They drive our economy, contributing over $2.3 billion in federal taxes and $1.3 billion in state and local taxes annually. Forcing these Americans out would cause irreparable harm to their children, families, and communities.

It is time we finally honor the immigrant tradition our great nation was built on and grant these Americans a permanent, legal home. It is the least we can do after all they have done for us through their contributions to our economy, culture, and society as a whole. I look forward to voting for and helping pass the Dream and Promise Act and I call on my colleagues to do the same.”
