Schakowsky statement on the Israeli Nation-State Bill
Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Whip, released the following statement in response to the Israeli Knesset’s consideration the “Nation-State Bill”
“I deeply cherish Israel’s Jewish and Democratic character, and I am proud to be a longtime supporter of the US-Israel relationship and our shared democratic values. The Nation-State bill currently being considered in the Knesset could significantly undermine the values that are the bedrock of our alliance.
“The bill conflicts with these values by its hostility to religious pluralism and by eroding the rights of Israeli LBGTQ individuals, women, Muslims, Druze, Christians, and Arabic speakers. All of these actions can only further alienate Diaspora Jews, many of whom are essential advocates for Israel on the world stage, and who hold these values dear. I stand with Israeli President Rivlin and the many Israeli and American Jews who have voiced serious concerns about this bill.
“Israel’s founding created a safe haven and refuge for Jews around the world fleeing discrimination and persecution. Israel’s founders wrote in its declaration of independence, that Israel “will ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex; it will guarantee freedom of religion, conscience, language, education and culture.” I call on Israel to remember the wisdom of its founders when considering the Nation-State bill. I hope the bill will not be passed and the voices for democracy and equality that many Jews in Israel and the Diaspora cherish will prevail.”
