Schakowsky Statement on the latest Republican Continuing Resolution

February 6, 2018

Rep. Jan Schakowsky, a Chief Deputy Whip, released the following statement after voting "no" on the Republican's fifth short-term spending bill of the current fiscal year:

"We are four months into the current fiscal year, which began on October 1st, and we still have no long-term budget to show for it. Instead, Republicans have come up with one short-term continuing resolution after another – this is number five for everyone keeping score at home. This is no way to govern. Authorizing our government's spending one month at a time creates massive uncertainty in our economy and does enormous harm to America's military and our small businesses.

"We're here because Republicans are hell bent on completely underfunding the programs that our businesses and families need. If Republicans had it their way, they would only provide a pittance for domestic discretionary spending – including education, job training, environmental protections, crucial health care programs – even Meals on Wheels. All this while Dreamers are still living in fear and awaiting our action. Today, for the fifth time in a span of four months, Republicans put their twisted priorities and inability to govern on full display."
