Schakowsky Statement on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

January 18, 2016

Today, Representative Jan Schakowsky released the following statement to honor the life of Martin Luther King, Jr.:

“The life, legacy, teachings and tireless advocacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. must never be forgotten. His fight not only for civil rights, but worker’s rights and for global peace helped move our country forward and provide opportunity for millions of Americans even generations later.

“The struggle for equality that we see today on the streets of Chicago and across this country led by a new generation of courageous leaders follows the example that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. pioneered. The Black Lives Matter movement has lifted the veil that has shrouded persistent discrimination by our criminal justice system against young black males. This new generation of leaders is proudly carrying on his legacy of fighting for justice through non-violent protest.

“On this important day, we must not only remember his advocacy in fighting against injustice, but we also must remember that, although he knew the struggle would be long and arduous, he saw a bright and better future ahead for our country. In the words of Dr. King, ‘I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality… I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.’ While we fight to ensure a more equitable world for all, we must maintain our hope and belief that the courage of our convictions will yield a better future. Thank you Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for your fight to bring progress to this nation.”
