Schakowsky Statement on Martin Luther King Jr. Day
EVANSTON – Today, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (IL-09) released the following statement commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. Day:
“Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. presented us with the vision of a world where justice and love triumph over bigotry and hate. He made us understand that each one of us has the power to speak out, to act, and to change the world.
“Not only was Dr. King an instrumental figure in the civil rights movement, but he was also a fierce advocate for workers' rights, voting rights, and an equitable health care system. His relentless efforts and passion for justice have left a mark on our nation, and the world, and will continue to be felt for generations to come.
“Dr. King was not afraid to question the status quo, arguing that ‘injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.’ He understood the interconnectedness of economic and social justice, recognizing that true progress can only be achieved when the rights of all people are acknowledged and protected.
“Today, and every day, let us recommit to honoring Dr. King’s legacy by fighting back against the systematic racism that continues to plague our health, education, justice, and economic systems. Further, we must confront the hate and intolerance that continues to divide us. We are more alike than we are different. Let Dr. King’s teachings serve as a guide for us all as we advocate for a more just society, one in which our systems work for everyone, not just a wealthy few."
